Difference Between Port Of Discharge And Port Of Delivery.

Most exporters and importers have this common doubts what is the difference between the port of discharge and the port of delivery.

On every transport document like the Bill of lading, you can see two columns “Port of Discharge” and “Port of Delivery”.

In some cases, both are the same and in some cases, both of them will be different.

I know it sounds stage! but don’t worry let’s me explain when both will be the same and when it will different.

The term “Port of Discharge” stands for where the goods are discharged and the term “Port of Delivery” stands for from where you will take delivery of goods.

Let’s understand this scenario with an example.

Example:- 1

If any importer from Mumbai, India imports goods from China to India, he will ask the shipping line or freight forwarder to mention the port of discharge and port of delivery at Nava Sheva Port, Mumbai India.

Because his company in Mumbai and he want to delivery of goods at Mumbai.

So, in this case, the port of discharge and port of delivery will be the same.

Example:- 2

If any importer from Delhi, India what to import from goods China to India, he will ask the shipping line or freight forwarder to mention the port of discharge and Nava Sheva Port, Mumbai India, and the port of delivery as ICD Tughlakabad port, New Delhi India.

Here in this scenario the importer is located in Delhi and wants goods in Delhi.

So he selects the port of delivery as ICD Tughlakabad port because he will take delivery of goods from Tughlakabad port.

I hope now you understand what is the difference between the port of discharge and port of delivery.

The Port of discharge is the port where your shipment will arrive and discharge your goods at that port.

If you are ready to take delivery of goods from the port of discharge then your port of delivery and port of discharge will be the same.

But if want to take delivery of goods from any other inland port then your port of delivery and port of discharge both are different.

The Port of discharge can be a destination seaport, wherein the Place of delivery is at an inland location away from the port of discharge.

If the carrier accepted goods from the shipper to deliver at a port other than a port of discharge, the cost of delivering cargo from the port of discharge to the place mentioned to deliver cargo has to be met by the carrier of goods.

If the carrier accepts goods up to the port of discharge only, the column ‘place of delivery’ leaves blank, which means the liability of the carrier to deliver cargo is only up to the port of discharge.

I cannot understand the difference between port of discharge and port of delivery.

    • Hi MD Mahabubul Islam,

Let’s assume, you importing 1 container from China, and your office is in Delhi, So, you decided to take delivery from TKD port.

In this case, your shipment first comes in any Sea Port like (Chennai Sea Port, Nhava Sheva, etc…) the shipment will be moved from Sea Port to TKD (Inland Port)

Here in this case Chennai port or Nhava Sheva port is the Port of Discharge and TKD (inland Port) is the Port of Delivery.

I hope now you understand the difference between the Port Of Discharge And the Port Of Delivery.
